The fifth annual Bethany Rose Cyr Memorial scholarship has been awarded to Tollgate High School student Ashley Price.

What Inspires Me to Enter the Medical Profession

From a very young age I knew that I wanted to spend my life doing something that would make a difference in someone else's. As I grew older and progressed through school, I found myself fascinated in my science classes and always questioning the functions of living things. More than any other class, freshman biology answered my questions. The same year that I took biology, I was also facing my grandfather's critical medical conditions. First a stroke, then a heart attack, a fall, a coma, and the head trauma and heart complications that followed. Surgery after surgery the doctors were able to tell my family that my grandfather had survived. Never in my life have I ever experienced a greater relief and sense of appreciation for people than I did in these moments. These surgeons were bettering the lives of others in the ways I had always dreamed of doing. These experiences, my passion for science, and my love for hands-on work have pushed me to strive to major in biology and one day become a surgeon.
